Tart Cherry & Banana Bowl with Toasted Pumpkin Seeds
A ruby-red bowl of tart cherries and cool banana slices under a scatter of toasted pumpkin seeds and a warm dust of cinnamon, gently sweet and soothing before bed.
Why it works
Tart cherries are one of the few whole foods that naturally contain melatonin, the hormone that signals sleep onset, and they also supply anthocyanins studied for their calming, anti-inflammatory effects. Banana adds vitamin B6, a cofactor the body uses to make serotonin and melatonin, alongside potassium. Pumpkin seeds contribute magnesium, a mineral involved in nervous-system relaxation and quality of sleep, with cinnamon rounding out the flavor and no added sugar.
Fits Mediterranean and MIND eating patterns that favor whole fruit, seeds, and magnesium-rich plants, dietary approaches associated with better sleep quality and lower stress markers in population studies.
Ingredients
- 240 g (about 1 1/2 cups) frozen tart cherries, thawed, or fresh pitted tart cherries
- 1 medium ripe banana (about 120 g), sliced
- 30 g (about 1/4 cup) raw pumpkin seeds (pepitas)
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 tsp pure maple syrup (optional)
- 180 ml (3/4 cup) unsweetened hemp or pea milk
Method
- Toast the pumpkin seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring often, for 3 to 5 minutes until they puff and smell nutty, then set aside to cool.
- Divide the tart cherries and any released juices between two small bowls and pour the hemp or pea milk around them.
- Fan the banana slices over the cherries and drizzle with the maple syrup if using.
- Scatter the toasted pumpkin seeds on top and finish with an even dusting of ground cinnamon. Serve slightly chilled about an hour before bed.
